Why Volunteer at Estacion Las Tortugas?

  • Work for a cause.
    • Scientists believe that due to the rate of adult leatherback deaths, the leatherback population will be extinct in 10-30 years.
  • Give back to the earth.
  • Learn new skills.
  • Experience the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica.
  • Biology students can gain much experience in their field.
  • Have fun!

Other ways you can help:

Do:

  • Recycle plastic bags properly- turtles mistake them for jellyfish (their favorite cuisine)
  • spread the word and knowledge about turtles

Do not:

  • drive or walk on the beach above high tide line- this crushes the nests below
  • use lights on the beach at night (infared is okay)
  • use flash photography around turtles
  • buy products made from turtles
  • walk/stand in front of turtles it scares them away
